HEAR FROM OUR VOLUNTEERS

Chris and Jenni in Samoa June 2024

"Being able to share my skills in business management and provide coaching provides me with the greatest level of satisfaction"

CHRIS  - 12 ASSIGNMENTS

Hearing about ABV from a friend in engineering, Chris wasn’t sure that he would have the opportunity to share his skills through ABV.

It wasn’t until he had retired that the right opportunity came along. “I saw an ABV advertisement saying that there is a project in PNG, and I thought, oh well, I’ll put my resume in and see where we end up.”  Seven years and twelve projects later, and Chris hasn’t looked back. From projects in the Pacific to business coaching in the Pilbara, he has worked across rich cultures to support people in realising their business goals.

This work included providing business coaching to two Martu men living in the Western Desert region of the Pilbara as part of ABV’s Martu Business Development Services program. ABV staff and volunteers worked closely with program sponsors, Greatland Gold – owners of the Telfer mine.

“One of the Martu men I was speaking to recently is doing really well,” Chris says referring to his work in the Pilbara. “He’s got his business accredited and he’s started to get contracts with the mining company.

“This is something that he had given up on before we had started working together. It's all driven by them, and I’d prefer it that way.”

This progress might not happen overnight, but Chris said it’s built on a foundation of trust, and feedback between the facilitator and participants. “I have to give credit to ABV. They nurtured relationships, and found out what both the community and individual participants need.”

He adds that it boils down to respect. “No matter if we have different worldviews, if people are respected and feel listened to and valued, it goes a long way to be able to connect.”

“I’m a facilitator. Nothing more,” Chris says about his work. “I want it to be all about their story. People love to tell you what to do, and I’m not going to do that".

“Being able to share my skills in business management and provide coaching provides me with the greatest level of satisfaction.”

Nauru Workshop Vera

"Building local tourism is helping people to improve their livelihoods and strengthen their communities"

VERA - 3 ASSIGNMENTS

Raised with an ethos of providing a helping hand to your neighbour, joining ABV in 2023 to volunteer with communities in Nauru was in some ways simply common sense for Sydney local, Vera.

When a volunteer position came up to support ABV’s work with the Nauru Chamber of Commerce and Sustainable Tourism Working Group to support a range of locally-led private sector strengthening initiatives, Vera, who has a longstanding career in marketing in Australia’s tourism and travel industry, didn’t hesitate to apply.

“I worked in the Pacific for many years with tourism boards and communities in Papua New Guinea when I was working for the Kokoda Track Foundation,” Vera adds. “I feel very connected to the Pacific, and the need to support our region; bringing everyone with us, and not leaving anyone behind.”

An avid traveller and founding director of sustainable tourism consultancy, EcoStory, Vera has come in contact with countless tourist businesses, but when it came to sharing her expertise for inclusive economic development in Nauru, Vera says ABV’s involvement has been vital.

“It’s essential to work with an organisation who understands the community's needs and can navigate the local complexities.  It’s not ABV coming in, it’s really finding the local parties and uncovering opportunities to support micro and small businesses in the ways that they want.”

“I’ve learnt so much from it as well. Along with training, I’ve learnt about a different culture and different ways of how things are done - building local tourism is helping people to improve their livelihoods and strengthen their communities. If I can support just five people to build their businesses, I will be so happy!”

"The YES Grow Program was an amazing experience — both an opportunity to experience a part of the world I wouldn't otherwise have had the chance to visit, and to work with such a diverse group of entrepreneurs"

AIDAN - 2 ASSIGNMENTS

From supporting rural communities in Australia to helping small business owners in Papua New Guinea, Aidan's volunteer journey demonstrates the power of skilled volunteering.

In 2025, Aidan volunteered with the Cann River Community Centre in regional Victoria as a Strategic Operational Planner, helping develop a three-year strategic plan and a 12-month operational roadmap.

His work supported the Centre's vision for services that play a vital role in community life, including the neighbourhood house, visitor information centre, foodbank, op shop and community programs.

“It was great to be able to support an organisation and management committee that play such an important role in the Cann Valley community. I was really impressed by the breadth of what the Centre does for the community — from providing support services and keeping the community connected to helping the community recover after bushfires and other challenges. It was very rewarding to contribute to the Centre's future direction and to work with a group of people so committed to their community.”

In November 2025, Aidan travelled to Kimbe, PNG, where he co-facilitated ABV's YES Grow Program. Working with 28 micro, small and medium enterprise owners, Aidan helped deliver a series of intensive workshops focused on business planning, strategy and growth.

The workshops were followed by one-on-one coaching sessions, enabling participants to refine their business models and develop practical 60-day action plans tailored to their goals.

Drawing on more than 15 years of experience in strategy, project management and organisational transformation, Aidan helped participants build confidence, strengthen their business capabilities and identify opportunities for sustainable growth.

“The YES Grow Program was an amazing experience — both an opportunity to experience a part of the world I wouldn't otherwise have had the chance to visit, and to work with such a diverse group of entrepreneurs. It was inspiring to see their passion, commitment and ingenuity. It was great to see the different businesses they were building, the challenges they were navigating and the ideas they had for growing their businesses.”

VOLUNTEERING FAQS

What is the time commitment?

There are many opportunities for volunteers to get involved in our programs throughout the year. Each assignment looks different depending on the program and needs of the community partners, though generally most assignments are part time.

Some assignments will be for a short period of time, for example, four weeks and be completed in an online capacity only. Other assignments will be longer, for example up to six months and involve a hybrid approach of online and in person delivery.

What expenses are covered?

ABV covers expenses related to volunteer assignments and travel. The details will be discussed in relation to the specific assignment. Some of the things we cover include: Working with Children check, Police check, medical screening and immunisations, transport to assignment location including personal car use when required, airport transfers, flights, accommodation, visa costs, travel insurance, reasonable communication costs while travelling, daily per diem while traveling to cover the cost of food and incidentals.

How are volunteers selected?

ABV screens all interested candidates for compliance, cultural fit and community capability to become a Registered ABV Volunteer.  Once registered, Volunteers may apply for assignments that are of interest. Every assignment has a specific Terms of Reference outlining skills and characteristics required against which volunteer applications are considered. While the specifics vary by assignment, volunteers are likely to be selected on:

  • Suitability of skill sets to the assignment objectives and deliverables.
  • Availability to deliver the assignment within the desired timeframes.
  • Compatibility of the volunteer and community partners.
  • Complementary skill sets to a partner volunteer working on the same assignment (where relevant).
  • Previous experience working or volunteering in a similar context.

What pre-checks do I need?

ABV is committed to the safeguarding of our community partners and volunteers and as such there are a number of compliance requirements.
All volunteers must be an Australian Citizen or Australian Permanent Resident, and they must be residing in Australia. Prior to commencing an assignment Volunteers must obtain a Police check, a Working with Children Check and a medical clearance for international travel.

What types of assignments are available?

ABV programs have a strong focus on economic development and institutional strengthening. The specific skillsets required can vary, however we regularly require experience across areas such as:

  • Strategic planning
  • Governance and board advisory
  • Marketing and communications
  • Finance and accounting
  • Human resources
  • Grant writing
  • Business development
  • Project management
  • Digital and technology
  • Website Development and Management
  • Monitoring and evaluation

Do I need previous volunteering experience?

There is no requirement to have volunteering experience. We are primarily looking for people who can apply their professional skills and experience.

Volunteering experience may be helpful but not essential. More importantly, we seek volunteers who are humble, curious, culturally aware and aligned with ABV's capacity-building approach. The most successful volunteers are those who listen, collaborate, share knowledge respectfully, and work alongside communities rather than simply providing solutions.

Can I volunteer while working?

Yes. There are part-time remote assignments available which allow the flexibility to volunteer alongside full-time employment.

What support will I receive?

You will be supported throughout your volunteer journey with ABV. Before your assignment begins, you will participate in onboarding and expectation-setting conversations to ensure everyone is aligned on the objectives, scope and ways of working. Throughout the assignment, you will have a dedicated ABV team member as your point of contact, providing guidance, support and assistance whenever needed. This helps set you up for a positive experience and enables you to make the greatest possible impact for the organisation you're supporting.

What difference will my contribution make?

ABV assignments are designed to transfer knowledge, strengthen organisational capability and support long-term community outcomes. Volunteers help organisations build the skills and systems they need to succeed beyond the assignment itself. Your contribution will be of great value to the community and personally rewarding too!
